I write about being Female, in my Twenties, in Corporate Nigeria, through my eyes. 🤔

Did he ask to hug me one last time as they do in movies?

Death always comes too early or too late — Unknown

For Fidelis Ugochukwu Awamba, death came too early.
At only 38, in a marriage of just 6 years, 9 months, and 24 days, to a very young wife, with three children (the last being 6 months) and a fresh admission letter to Rhodes University, South Africa for a Ph.D.; he was just starting out his life and finding his place in the world when the unthinkable happened. His candle went out.

My dad was a record-breaker…

Loads of *awkward* alert: Laugh a little

It’s Saturday morning. I am congratulating myself on doing my laundry early while watching the replay of Man City’s game against Newcastle from last night. My phone rings and I answer it without looking at the caller ID. Mistake 1. Hi! It’s me. Aish! I pluck the phone from my ear to look. Eye roll. Not now, please. Not again.

Hey, you! How have you been? Been good. Missing you. Hmmm. Please, miss me with that. I was just thinking about you and how long it’d been since I sang to you. I’d like to do that. Please. You don’t…

Be kinder and considerate, please

The word “Strong” has been misconstrued as regards human beings in more ways than one. As soon as the word is associated with you, that’s all you are.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, Strong means having or using great force or control; having a lot of physical or mental strength

You have no right to be weak sometimes. You dare not.
Your strength must be all-around, all the time. If it isn’t, you are not strong. You must either be strong or weak.
You cannot be both at different times, for different reasons.
That is what the world thinks. It…

SPORTS AND LOVE

You can achieve anything together, even with the smallest of margins

The World Athletics Relays took place in Chorzow’s Silesian Stadium, Poland, from May 1–2. It was such a joy to watch athletes from across the world get back on the competition track after so long. Yet another sign that we are moving past the disaster that was sports in 2020.

Yikes! This is no sports commentary. Get on with it already.

Watching these athletes tear down the track taught me a few things about relationships. We’ll dissect the events as well as the lessons learned.

Got my credit notification email today. It stated that I had received my first paycheck from Medium.

I remember joining this space in 2019. The ultimate goal was to read and learn only. I still recall the first article that brought me to the platform. It was Dr Ola Brown (Orekunrin)’s Lessons to Learn from the World’s First Air Ambulance Founder. I paid the $5 for two months and slacked.

When I resumed being a paying member in September 2020, I never wanted to write. However, there’s this positive vibe in the air on Medium that captures you after a…

MOTHERS, AND US

Why didn’t this story take off, even in the spirit of Mother’s day celebrations?

Mothers are superheroes indeed. No joke.

My mother has been the only parent I have known since age six.
Her hands scolded, cuddled, molded, polished me into the person who I am. I remain grateful. I was never a difficult child, but my mum thinks I have grown into a difficult adult. Whenever I ask too many questions about Christianity, she goes ‘This is not how I raised you!’ But, ma, even Jesus asked questions, a lot. As I zip up my favorite cobalt blue sleeveless dress, she humphs her disapproval when I ask “How do I look?”
Won’t you at…

I woke up Friday morning to lots of articles talking about a mysterious $500 being added to 1000 writers' April 2021 earnings. A whooping thousand and I was excluded?

These writers left us here and walked to the Medium podium to pick up their cheques with a wide grin.
They should have been more somber. Should have looked to us for permission to accept their gift. There should have been no victory lap.

My thoughts went from Awww, that’s so sweet, to those writers are so lucky, to I’d like to be in that 1000 someday, to hitting my head…

There’s been a mass shooting in a Texas church. Five people are confirmed dead, including the gunman, who turned the gun on himself. Over twenty other churchgoers are severely injured.

Olunna!, are you free to talk?
Hold on a minute while I step out of my office. Ok, mum, what’s up?
Have you seen the news? Someone just sent me a BC message on Whatsapp. There was a shooting in Texas yesterday during evening mass. What?!
Don’t scream. Please help me confirm if it is true.
I immediately google ‘Texas Shooting’ and I see so many…

“A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference.” — Winnie-the-Pooh (A. A. Milne)

Being a thoughtful person can be so hard (or not)

Human beings love to be cared for. We want to be loved and feel loved.
We want our loved ones to never forget our birthdays and to gift us exactly what we have in mind (laughable). We want a hand to hold when it seems the world is crashing down on us. We want reassurance. We want someone who’ll be there to push us over the finishing line when we are too weak…

As Tim Denning rightly said, a side gig is no longer a luxury but a necessity for many of us. Writing is the most prominent side gig I have right now which does not disrupt my 9–5 job.
Maybe you are a new writer, like me, trying to find your place as well. Have you got captivating short stories that do not fit into the…
